Ref. 17000
This vintage, steel Rolex Oysterquartz Ref. 17000 watch from the 1980s is an excellent example of a remarkably unconventional tool watch. With its sharp, angular case and Rolex-stamped, integrated bracelet, it represents the very best of the brand's ingenuity. It comes as a full-set, with its box, punched-paperwork (dated 4th June, 1983) and accompanying literature.
The Rolex Oysterquartz Ref. 17000 succeeded its highly-collectable predecessor, the Ref. 5100 Date (limited series), which housed the Beta 21 movement. The Beta 21 was adopted by numerous Swiss watch brands throughout the period - leading to Rolex’s development of their own quartz movement, soon after.
In 1977, Rolex introduced two (in-house) quartz calibres for the Oysterquartz models (5035 for the Datejust and 5055 for the Day-Date). Featuring 11 jewels and 32khz oscillators, these Rolex Oysterquartz movements were decorated with Geneva stripes (much like a mechanical Rolex) and certified by the COSC as electronic chronometers.
The dial of this Rolex Oysterquartz Ref. 17000 is in exceptionally good condition, has a matte-black finish, applied index markers, with classic 'ROLEX’ and ‘OYSTERQUARTZ DATEJUST’ text referenced on it. The distinctive, angular case is sharply beveled, with a 36mm diameter. It has its Rolex crown and comes equipped with its original, integrated Rolex bracelet and clasp (ref. 17000). This particular case dates to circa 1979 (serial 576 XXXX).
Inside the watch, it houses Rolex’s calibre 5035 ‘Officially Certified Superlative Chronometer’ grade quartz movement.
Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
