The dial

Marking a departure from Smith's usual dial layout during the period when this watch was made, the aesthetics of this Series 2 place it within a more modern and minimalist school. Most immediately evident is the absence of the typical brushed chapter ring with engraved numerals, a choice that makes the dial feel more expansive, and allowing the engine-turning a bigger canvas to shine. The applied numerals float above the dial, giving it a greater sense of depth. Some brushed elements remain, found at the seconds sub-dial, power reserve indicator, and on the cartouche bearing Smith's signature just below the 12 o'clock numeral.

Another modern choice is the monochromatic colour palette, with the deep purple — almost black — applied numerals and hands a delightful contrast against the textured background. The engine-turning found across the dial is of the basket-weave variety, and this is placed at a slightly different angle at the power reserve section, which is a subtle way of differentiating the two readings. The inner section of the sub-dial features a hob-nail pattern of engine turning, providing a varied sense of texture across the dial. These elements are hand-crafted from beginning to end, including the hour and minute hands, tipped with spades that are a signature of Smith's watches.

The case

The case is one of the more recent versions, and is 40mm in white gold. The caseback is engraved with "SERIES 2" and the watch's number, while bearing the traditional and maker's own hallmarks. The straight lugs found here complement the dial's modern appearance, and make the watch a comfortable fit on the wrist despite its size.

The movement

The traditional movement is revealed through the sapphire case-back, and is very much inspired by the British-style of pocket watches from makers such as Tompion, Graham and Arnold. It has understated, English frosted finishings in a combination of warm, golden tones, creating a striking backdrop for the blue screws. A raised barrel bridge and balance cock add a revealing depth to the movement. The escapement has been updated by Smith to his single-wheel variant.

Despite the later production date, the engravings found on the three-quarter plate, as on the dial, are the work of master engraver Charles Scarr. Engraved on the raised portion of the three-quarter plate are the brand mark, “Isle of Man” and the date of manufacture, while the serial number is engraved below. Notably, all the engravings are applied directly on the movement.

Closer look

Condition

This Roger W. Smith Series 2 is in very good overall condition. The case and lugs show signs of wear throughout, specifically light marks on the outside of the lugs and a deeper mark towards the crown. The dial, hands, and movement are free of imperfections and have been well preserved. All hallmarks and engravings are crisp and well defined.
