Monte Carlo Timer | Broad Arrow
This rare, RAF-issued Heuer Monte-Carlo Timer, with engraved “Broad Arrow”, features military markings on its case-side and reverse.
Originally developed as a dashboard-mounted timer for rallying and other pursuits, such examples were also issued and used in various types of RAF and RN aircrafts. Best known for their use in Harrier Jump Jets (as these lacked cockpit clocks), the 3B/3822 was perfectly suited instrument for long-range timing - attributed with the designation "A" Stores, "V&A". The “A” served to indicate that a replacement would only possible if the original was returned damaged or otherwise unserviceable, with “V&A” requiring the timer be locked away, when not in service.
Used in a variety of applications - from the aircraft cockpit to the evaluation and timing of missiles - legibility in low-light conditions would have been one of the critical elements, sought by the Ministry of Defence, when issuing such timers. As indicated by the large 'T' below the centre stem, both the minute and seconds hands show tritium material at their tips, matching the large Arabic numerals on the dial. Operated by three pushers, the jumping hour-disc, minute hand and seconds hand complete the utilitarian look and feel, with a rotating bezel offering pilots extra timing capabilities.
