A. Lange & Söhne
Zeitwerk | 140.032 | rose gold
Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall, it was in early 1990 that Walter Lange formulated a plan to revive his family business in Glashütte. The brand has since unquestionably established itself as one of the world's leading watchmakers - challenging Swiss dominance and raising the bar for both aesthetic and movement design of fine timepieces. With German tenacity and precision, the brand creates pieces that are elegant statements on the wrist, with hand-finished movements of the highest quality. In 2001, the Saxon manufactory was able to re-locate back to its original, historic building in Glashütte, which housed A. Lange & Söhne from 1845 until its partial destruction by Allied bombing in 1945.
Instead of displaying the time vertically (as seen in most historical digital displays), the time on the Lange Zetiwerk is read from left to right like an actual digital clock. Demonstrating pure technical and aesthetic virtuosity, the Zeitwerk carries a large, hand-finished ‘bridge’ on the dial with apertures at 9 and 3 o’clock for the hours and minutes respectively. Placed on this same bridge (at 6 o'clock) is the sub-seconds display, mirrored by a power-reserve at 12 on the dial below the "A. Lange & Söhne" and "Glashütte 1/SA" typography.
Particularly impressive considering the three large discs that have to be moved to display the time, the power-reserve measures approx. 36 hours when fully wound. This proportionately large power-reserve is made possible though a remontoir, integrated between the barrel wheel and the balance. This mechanism gains, holds, and releases the energy required to move each disc every 60 seconds in a small burst of power, and then over the remaining minute rebuilds, continuing in a cycle.
The watch is housed within a contemporary 41.9mm rose-gold case, measuring just 12.9mm thick and perfectly suited for the modern wrist. One of the superb elements of this watch is the crown located at 2 o’clock, unobtrusive and comfortable to use. This particular reference is manually-wound, with a sapphire display back revealing the calibre L.043.1, a completely in-house developed movement of 416 beautifully finished components. The architecture of A. Lange and Söhne movements are perhaps their most distinctive feature, with a three dimensional aspect that is truly unique.
The aesthetics of the movement are just as impressive as the mechanics, with the chamfering and interior angles superbly hand-finished. Moreover, it features an artistic flourish, a balance cock engraved by one of Lange’s master engravers. In fact, each individual watchmaker's unique engraving style can be identified as a result. The bridges and plates are made from German silver, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc with a warm silver tone that will develop a subtle patina over time. The use of this metal, along with the hand-engraved balance cock is a signature of A. Lange & Söhne.
It is a remarkable achievement to have made a mechanical movement with an instantaneous jumping-minute and complete digital display, but even more so in such a short time. This has undeniably reinforced the brand's position in the pantheon of horological greats.
Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
