Sylvain Pinaud
Origine Pièce Unique

How can discipline allow design to flourish? Created as part of a collaboration between Sylvain Pinaud and A Collected Man, this unique piece wears a titanium case and is part of a monochromatic trio. Combining Pinaud’s asymmetrical design with a restrained colour palette, the piece allows texture and form to shine.

The idea behind these dials was to explore a monochromatic palette, while creating contrast and life through the different textures applied to the surface. What is interesting is that the colour itself changes depending on the texture and treatment applied to each area. A matte surface, a brushed surface or another texture can produce a subtly different tone, even when starting from the same colour.

A unique piece from Sylvain Pinaud, one of five separate examples commissioned by A Collected Man. The watch was created over a process of close collaboration, retaining Pinaud's design while introducing a minimalist and monochromatic palette to the dial and movement.

THE WATCHMAKER

Pinaud graduated from the Lycée Edgar Faure in Morteau in 1998, then went on to spend two years learning how to recondition calibres with Gilbert Petit-Jean, a movement assembler. He then took a year off to backpack around the world before settling back down in Switzerland to work with Franck Muller for eleven years. This was a significant part of his development as a watchmaker, as he moved around the various workshops, learning different skills.

After Franck Muller, Pinaud moved out of Geneva and to Sainte-Croix, where he took up a position with Dominique Mouret, a clock restorer. He spent five years restoring classic pieces before joining Techniques Horlogères Appliquées (THA), a manufacture specialising in developing complicated calibres. This is where he met Vianney Halter – who he considers his mentor. After this, he did a five-year stint at Carl F. Bucherer working on movement prototypes. Finally, in 2016, Pinaud finally decided to take the leap and rent a small workshop where he began a new career as an independent watchmaker.
