28GML SOUYOU
This is the 28 GML SOUYOU*, the unique piece that won Voutilainen its fifth Artistic Crafts Watch Prize at the 2025 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). The dial – a distillation of hundreds of years of mother-of-pearl inlay and urushi lacquer craft – was created by hand at master Tatsuo Kitamura’s Unryu-an studio over a thousand hours. This artistry is cased in 39mm of platinum with visual cues typical to Voutilainen. Powered by calibre 28 GML, the watch displays two time zones – home on the 24-hour inner chapter, as well as travel time on the primary display. The hour hand can be set to local time in one-hour increments by pushing on the crown.
The craft
The dial on the SOUYOU is the result of a thousand hours of patience and labour. It is a marriage of several distinct crafts – it involves Kirigane, a style in which the artisans cut pieces of gold sheets. To this, they then add purposefully shaped pieces of New Zealand abalone and great green turban, a species native to the Indo-Pacific. The craft, referred to as Kirigai, places the rich greens and blues of the abalone shells beside the ever-changing tones of mother-of-pearl to create an intricate and vibrant mosaic. Gold dusting, typical of Kinpun craft, bathes the pattern in aureate lustre.
The 2016 Kaen is an earlier example of the ongoing collaboration between Kari Voutilainen and Unryu-an studio.
These details are lacquered for perpetuity in urushi tree sap, which gives the method its name. It is a craft master practitioner Takashi Kitamura has blended with the Maki-e (gold dust) and Raden inlay art from the Edo and Meiji periods he spent years studying. His work, which distils these ancient techniques and styles, has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. In 2002, Kitamura became the first living lacquerware artist to have a solo exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
The master is often simply referred to as Unryu-an, which is the lacquerwork workshop he founded and heads to this day.
The 2013 unique piece Sarasamon was the first Voutilainen to serve as Kitamura’s canvas. Since then, examples such as the Hisui (2014) Aki-No-Kure (2017), Starry Night Vine (2019), Ji-Ku (2022) and the SOUYOU in 2025 have gone on to win Artistic Crafts Watch Prize at the GPHG.
