RM 010 | Titanium
RM 010 Ti
Founded by Monsieur Mille in 1999, in collaboration with famed movement manufacturer APRP (Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi), the brand has from the very beginning, demonstrated a taste for experimental, high-tech watches. When Richard Mille released the RM001 tourbillon in 2001, it was just a hint of where the brand would progress to, over the subsequent decades, taking inspiration from the worlds of Formula One, aerospace and automotive research. With their motto of 'a racing machine on the wrist' in mind, Richard Mille's designs reinforce the concept of performance, while innovation remains at the core of the brand's identity, both in watchmaking and materials-science.
Richard Mille’s philosophy was made clear when the RM001 was discontinued after just 17 pieces; limited examples of experimental watches, advancing in complexity and innovation over time. The RM 010 was launched in 2006 as a development of the RM005, shown by an increase in size and a higher level of skeletonisation of the movement. Like the RM 005 and RM 011, the movement of the RM 010 is fixed to the case on shock isolating rubber mounts and Richard Mille screws, as opposed to a traditional casing ring.
Like all watches from the Jura-based manufacture, the RM 010 has a unique presence on the wrist. This example uses a brushed titanium, tonneau-shaped case - measuring 39.30 x 48.00 mm. Taking a year of research and development, the sandwich-style construction of the Richard Mille tonneau case comprises of three parts; a centre section, as well as front and back bezels. For the case to remain sealed, tolerances on the RM 010 case are extremely high (requiring a fit of 100th of a millimetre between parts), with its curvature further complicating the machining process and involving 202 separate machining operations for each case.
The white-painted, luminous numerals are shown on a sapphire plate, appearing to float between the hands and movement. The small dots marking the hours on the rehaut are also luminous, while the tips of the skelentonised hands are lume-filled for increased legibility in low-light conditions. The layered effect of the various sapphire plates, skeletonised parts and movement components, renders the RM 010 visually complex, much like the engine bay of Formula One cars, which served as inspiration. Richard Mille uses highly-contrasting colours and shapes to achieve optimal legibility and functionality, against the open-worked movement below.
Developed by Vaucher SA is the self-winding Calibre RM005. The calibre is skeletonise like all references from Richard Mille, with the baseplate and bridges produced using Grade 5 titanium. With a variable position rotor exclusive to the brand, the winding of the mainspring can be adapted to most effectively suit to the user’s level of activity. By adjusting the placement of the high-palladium white-gold wings, the rotor’s inertia is modified. Doing this, the winding speed can be increased for those with reduced arm and hand movements, or slowed down for those taking part in high-activity sports.
This Richard Mille RM 010 displays all the characteristics that make the brand’s watches so coveted today. It comes fitted with a navy blue velcro Richard Mille strap, and is accompanied by its original stamped warranty card and fitted presentation box, as well as a second Richard Mille leather strap.
Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
