One of the few Korona K0 Diver pieces with a matte, sand-blasted case, this piece is emblematic of Sarpaneva’s individualistic style, combining retro-futuristic design with sleek aesthetics and remarkable watchmaking.
The Korona K0 has become the most recognisable execution of Stepan Sarpaneva’s watchmaking vision. The model has undergone several iterations throughout its lifetime, with this stainless steel, matte-grey version appearing with an unusual dial and caseback.
Practically speaking, a unique feature of the watch is that the dive time ring is integrated within the movement itself and is operated through the crown rather than the bezel. The retro-futuristic appearance of the watch is further augmented by the luminous material in both hands and indices.
The watchmaker’s idiosyncratic and distinctive character can clearly be seen through the piece’s design. Due to the small numbers produced at the workshop, Sarpaneva himself notes that most of these are more or less custom-made, and unique in some way. Crafted from stainless steel, the angular yet subdued scalloped edges of the case are particularly eye-catching. Further to this, the dial takes inspiration from grilles, with an openworked face that gives us a glimpse into the inner workings of the watch. Stepan Sarpaneva favours the use of Soprod’s self-winding A10 in his watches, extensively modified to suit his requirements for each piece.
Meanwhile, the back of this piece features the distinctive moon face that has become synonymous with Sarpaneva’s brand, an enigmatic detail that is a repeated motif throughout nearly all his pieces. It has been suggested that the face of the moon is in fact a stylised version of Sarpaneva’s own face, but more distinctly, it is reminiscent of old school pocket watches, but with the watchmaker’s characteristic style.

As the son of jewellery designer Pentti Sarpaneva, and nephew of the internationally acclaimed designer and artist Timo Sarpaneva, it was always the case that Stepan’s career would take a creative direction.
Educated at the Finnish School of Watchmaking and then WOSTEP, his path to independent watchmaking was composed of various, rich learning experiences. As many others had done before him, Sarpaneva spent some time restoring antique and vintage watches, including at Parmigiani, alongside Kari Voutilainen.
As he put it: “I had to really learn the history of watchmaking with Kari, because we were working on things like minute repeaters and perpetual calendars, making parts for them.” Following his experience there, Sarpaneva also spent some time with Vianney Halter and Christophe Claret, which helped shape his skills and vision.
In addition to these wide-ranging experiences, Sarpaneva had been designing his own watches as far back as 1999, when he was still at Parmigiani. These were mainly one-off pieces, which he created for himself. However, a Japanese retailer once spotted one of these on his wrist, and asked if he could possibly order one. Sarpaneva says, “I made something for him and then a few pieces here and there for my friends. It grew very organically like that.” In 2003, the watchmaker formed his own brand in Helsinki, Finland.
“These watches are not created for everyone. They are exceptional timepieces intended for exceptional people.”
