Often described as one of the more adventurous models to be initially re-introduced as part of the Collection Priveé Cartier Paris (CPCP) range, the Asymétrique is a classic Cartier design, which has captured the imagination of collectors for years. Initially known as the Tank Oblique, it was envisioned for drivers in 1936. The parallelogram shaped case features a dial that is slanted diagonally, such that when their hands were up on a steering wheel, the dial was oriented upright. It was later renamed the Tank Asymétrique, taking several different shapes over its lifetime.
The Asymétrique was reissued twice before, as a limited edition in 1996 and then as part of the CPCP in 2006. This piece, which was part of the most recent 2020 release, is one of just 100 pieces produced in platinum. Another 200 were made in yellow and pink gold. The small production number, together with the infrequency of these releases, makes this an especially rare interpretation of Cartier's core aesthetic.
The design of this Cartier Asymétrique is clearly grounded in the aesthetics of both 1996 and 2006 versions. The watch bears several striking similarities to its predecessors, such as through the use of Arabic numerals and the third lug at either end, which is centred with the case. In keeping with modern tastes, the proportions have been updated, with the case measuring at 47 x 26mm.
The whimsical design translates exceptionally well in a modern context, with its geometrical lines and angles. The dial is brushed with a pattern that radiates outwards, framed by the polished case, and bearing alternating Arabic and baton-style markers. Two small dots are placed below 12 o'clock and above 6 o'clock to aid readability. This platinum example is further distinguished thanks to the ruby, rather than traditional sapphire cabochon crown. The watch is powered by the 1917 MC, an in-house created calibre.
