Vacheron Constantin Historiques American | 1921 | rose gold
Vacheron Constantin boast a lengthy and uninterrupted history of manufacture, dating back to 1755. The firm’s founder, Jean-Marc Vacheron, was one of many cabinotier-watchmakers who specialised in the production of complex components. Upon partnering with François Constantin, Vacheron (the brand) became widely-known for upholding the finest horological traditions - enamelling, piercing, engraving and engine-turning.
The Vacheron Constantin ‘American 1921’ was introduced in 2008, as part of the brand’s Historiques collection - paying tribute to the Geneva watchmaker’s archives. The origins of the reference can be traced back to a limited series of watches produced by Vacheron Constantin, for American motorists. The idea was to create a driver's watch made with a rotated dial, in order to make the viewing of time easier with a hand on the steering wheel. Vacheron first introduced this particular style of watch in 1919, with the dial aligned to the left, before adjusting to the right side in 1921 (giving the watch its moniker).
The watch displays a finely-grained, silvered dial with guilloché subsidiary seconds. The scrolling Arabic numerals are taken from 19th century pocket watches, with elegantly-curved lines and the “4” tipped with a cross. The font for the sub-seconds is similarly inspired, further accentuated by Breguet hands. Despite the 45-degree-angle of the dial, the sub-seconds dial at three o’clock is vertically aligned.
The rose-gold case measures 40mm by 40mm - further emphasised by its square-shape, giving the watch a distinct presence - while discrete, short lugs allow for a comfortable fit to any wrist size. The crown is placed in the upper-right corner of the case, offering a unique profile while blending neatly with the silhouette. With its angled dial and cushion-shaped case, the American 1921 is arguably the most visually distinctive, contemporary watch made by Vacheron Constantin.
The American 1921 integrates Vacheron Constantin’s 4400 AS calibre - beautifully finished, with exquisite chamfering on all angles, polishing and decoration, in the form of deep Geneva striping. The 4400 calibre uses a large single barrel with reverser – boasting 65 hours of power reserve. The brand's motto “Do better if possible, which is always possible”, is evident in the exceptional finishing of each Vacheron & Constantin watch - surpassing the highest standards of finishing and decorating of mechanical movements, know as the ‘Poinçon de Genève’ or ‘Geneva Seal’.
This Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 comes on a brown alligator strap and corresponding rose-gold tang buckle. The watch is a full-set, with its original box, papers and accompanying materials from the manufacture.
