Released in 1921, the Tank Cintrée has an extraordinary history, and was first conceived in the Paris branch of Cartier. Instantly recognisable from its curved design and elongated shape, the Tank Cintrée wraps comfortably around the wrist and a great deal of diversity can be found in the model, ranging from font, size of numerals, thickness of case, or even the style of screws.
When it was first introduced, it ushered in a new way of looking at wristwatches, as more than just functional objects to be strapped to the arm. The Cintrée argued for a rather different idea of what a wristwatch could be, born from the mind of a jeweller, rather than that of a traditional watchmaker. Far larger and bolder than anything else on the market at the time, the Cintrée captured the attention of those looking for something different.
This Tank Cintrée was part of the 2018 revival of the model, and features the Cintrée's classic curved case, in rose gold. The black dial of the watch is punctuated by white printed indices and the Arabic numerals 12 and 6, in addition to a railway-style minute track. The sword-shaped hands are also in rose gold. The crown is set with Cartier's signature sapphire cabochon. The watch is an excellent piece for any collector looking to add a traditional Cartier piece with a modern twist to their collection.
The movement that powers this Tank Cintrée is the mechanical calibre 8971MC, based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 846. Hidden behind a brushed closed caseback, the movement is just as excellently finished and put together as the rest of the watch.
