The Concept

H. Moser & Cie has long-established roots within the words of horology, with the manufacture originally founded by in 1828 in St. Petersburg, Russia. During this period, Heinrich Moser’s clients included Russian princes, as well as members of the Russian Imperial Court.

Many years later, in 2005, a German engineer by the name of Dr. Jürgen Lange,

previously employed by big players like IWC and Eterna, who struck out on his own in 2002 with the idea of registering a new brand called Moser Schaffhausen AG. He made Moser’s great-grandson, Roger Nicholas Balsiger, honorary chairman of the board of directors (Moser’s name had died out with the passing of the sonless Henri Moser).

the brand H. Moser & Cie was relaunched, with Heinrich Moser's great-grandson involved in the project.

Since then, H. Moser & Cie has created watches which combine classic styling, with a number of innovative features. From refining movement mechanics to unusual dial treatment techniques, their timepieces have become rather visually distinctive and recognisable. This Endeavour Perpetual Calendar is an extension of those principles.

Rethinking the perpetual calendar

Whilst perpetual calendars are usually quite visually rich, on account of the amount of information which needs to be displayed, the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar reduces the complication to its most essential form.

The Design

The most instantly striking feature of the Endeavour Perpetual Moon Concept is its rather distinctive black dial. The dial is coated in Vantablack, a black coating renowned as the darkest substance in existence, traditionally used by astrophysicists in telescopes and by the military for thermal camouflage. This material is composed of carbon nanotubes, which are 10,000 times finer than a human hair, aligned vertically alongside each other. As a result of this, the coating absorbs 99.9% of the light which hits it, creating a rather unique depth to the dial.

The Endeavour Perpetual Moon Concept features highly polished hands and a visually restrained moonphase at 6 o’clock, both of which appear to float against the stark black backdrop. Executed in contrasting colours, the unadorned moonphase indication is deceptively accurate, with just one day’s deviation in every 1,027 years. A discrete AM/PM hand, nested within the hour and minute hands, is used to help set the moonphase precisely, in coordination with the crown and the pusher set into the case flank. The overall appearance created is that of a shimmering, silver moon, floating against a dark night sky.

The case, measuring 42mm across and 12.9mm thick, is made out of stainless steel. Always seeking to combine classic and more forward-thinking design, the nod to the past is largely achieved through the round, bevel-free shape of the case. Polished throughout, it elegantly complements the hands, as well as the depth of the dial.

The Movement

The Endeavour Perpetual Moon Concept is powered by the hand-wound HMC 801 calibre. It integrates H. Moser & Cie’s innovative interchangeable escapement module. The escapement was developed to simplify the adjustment, cleaning and servicing of the watch, enabling a watchmaker to remove the existing escapement, clean and oil the rest of the movement before installing a new pre-adjusted module.

The in-house calibre HMC 801 movement is a large, 15 ligne movement that beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The double-barrel construction allows for a seven-day power reserve, which can be monitored through a power reserve indicator on the movement side. This calibre also features hacking seconds for accurate time-setting.
