P. Journe’s brass movement production. All the dials and brass movement plates were coated in ruthenium, a rare inert metal belonging to the platinum family. Due to its extreme hardness and insensitivity to oxidation, it is often used in electronics or aerospace engineering, though rarely ever employed in watchmaking.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ruthenium Collection are aesthetically distinctive. The solid gold dials feature the gentle texture and lustre closely associated with the brand’s earliest pieces. However, the coating of ruthenium gives both the dial and the brass movements a distinctive look – the texture shines through despite the darker, more muted tone. It changes constantly with the light, going from rich anthracite to the light ethereal shade of delicate, cooled down embers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of the pieces from the collection are housed in a 40mm platinum case, an evolution on the more prevalent 38mm case size of the time. Limited to 99 pieces for each model, the Ruthenium Collection includes the Tourbillon Souverain, the Chronomètre à Resonance, the Octa Chronographe, the Octa Calendrier and the Octa Réserve de Marche Jour et Nuit. In total, 495 Ruthenium Collection pieces are understood to have been produced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf these, the Octa Jour et Nuit stands apart as the only series exclusive to the Ruthenium Collection – there is no other standard production series with this complication, making the 99 pieces of the Ruthenium Collection all the rarer for it. The Octa Jour et Nuit Ruthenium series was created between 2002 and 2005.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 40mm platinum case stands 10.5mm tall. Owing to the short lugs, it is compact and comfortable on the wrist. The bezel is rounded and meets the flat midcase in a lip. A similar detail marks the point where the exhibition caseback comes to the midcase. The lugs, equal in scale to the width of the midcase, flow almost organically from it. The rope-style knurled crown, a well-established brand design cue, completes the picture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 20mm lugs are fitted with a curved black, large-grained leather strap from the brand, secured by a signed platinum pin buckle. This example includes an additional fresh burgundy F. P. Journe quick release strap.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe signature off-centre time display is constructed on a whitened silver base and concentrated on the right. It features a textured inner sector followed by an Arabic chapter in the brand’s proprietary and signature font. A chemin de fer track of minutes follows, with an Arabic chapter at intervals of five. The smaller seconds overlap this time display and have a sector-style layout. The feuille-style hours and minutes hands are heat blued, as is the seconds indicator.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo the left of the time display is the arc of the 120-hour, up-down, marine chronometer-style réserve de marche – it expresses hours since the movement was last fully wound. Just north of it, nestled between the power reserve and the time display, is the window of the colour-matched twin-wheel date display. It is set by pulling the crown out to the second position. The white pad-printed brand mark and motto are arched along the northern edge of the dial.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust south of the power reserve is the day\/night indicator, with a globular scale. The words “Jour et Nuit” are printed below the scale. The blue of the day\/night wheel matches the shade of the heat blued hands, adding visual consistency to the dial.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe display caseback is framed by a rim laser engraved with the brand mark and credo, the precious metal and Octa mark, as well as the limited series number out of 99. Visible through the sapphire crystal is the self-winding F. P. Journe calibre 1300, a mainstay of the Octa line from this era, and designed to integrate a host of complications, like the day\/night seen here, without adding to the dimensions of the movement. It is constructed with 32 jewels and a shock absorber mechanism. It features a straight-line lever escapement, and monometallic 4-arm balance with 4 timing weights, adjusted to 5 positions. The calibres includes a self-compensating free-sprung flat balance spring, and an off-centre bi-directional 22-carat gold rotor with barleycorn guilloché decoration. It is engraved \"Exclusive Power Reserve System\" and \"Precision Chronometer\". The bridges are adorned with circular Côtes de Genève. The baseplate wears perlage. All aspects are evenly coated in ruthenium, yet the different underlying metals renders the effect very different. The lighter shade of the winding rotor stands out against the darker tone of the bridges and baseplate.   \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2004, F. P. Journe began manufacturing movements from 18-carat gold. The brass movements – of which there are only 2,000 examples created across all lines between 2001 and 2004 – have come to be the most collectible both for their rarity and because they represent the original vision of the watchmaker.
