Though the watchmaker had been increasingly less involved in the brand from 1995 onwards, he took an active role in the design of the Papillon, to mark this historic milestone. It is understood that this was Roth's last creation for the eponymous brand, prior to starting a new chapter of independent watchmaking, under the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.acollectedman.com\/collections\/all\/products\/jean-daniel-nicolas-tourbillon\"\u003eJean Daniel Nicolas\u003c\/a\u003e name.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis distinctive jump hour model takes its name from the French word for butterfly, on account of the atypical dial layout, reminiscent of butterfly wings. It is understood that only 250 pieces were ever produced, with 110 in white gold, 110 in rose gold and 30 in platinum.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe layout of this rose gold Papillon is satisfyingly symmetrical, with the oversized seconds indication sitting at the center of the dial. The dial features two different styles of guilloché, which contrast with the brushed surfaces of the minute and seconds chapter rings. The variety in finishing and the construction of the dial on several levels gives a satisfying depth to the design, as well as a welcome touch of variety. The Clous de Paris guilloché is a nice touch that invokes the earliest examples from Roth, harking back to first days of him creating these pieces. The \"Daniel Roth\" signature sits on either side of the dial, further leaning into the symmetry of the overall layout.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece also makes use of Roth’s signature double ellipse case, which is unique in its execution. Neither round nor rectangular, it balances the two different shapes, complemented by a stepped bezel and sharp, straight lugs. In character with Roth’s tendency to provide a new twist on tradition and history, the watch is powered by a Girard-Perregaux calibre 3000 ébauche, and is finished, decorated, and engraved by hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday, Daniel Roth continues to create under the banner of Jean Daniel Nicolas, a mark he runs with his wife and son.
