Famous for their highly-functional pilots’ and navigators’ timepieces - tool watches are very-much in the International Watch Co’s DNA. The IWC Ingénieur, or “Engineer’, has few rivals in that regard. Advertised as “ideal for all professional men who require a watch which is fully reliable, accurate and trouble-free under all conditions” – its design focuses on high performance. Taking inspiration from the near-perfect military watch of its day, IWC’s own Mark XI, the Ingénieur truly represents a best-in-class watch.

Part of a lesser-known breed of purposeful watches from the late 1950s and early 60s, the IWC Ingénieur 666AD, as the name suggests, was squarely aimed at engineering professionals. The most recognizable of this genre of watch, is the Rolex Milgauss, with its distinctive “lightning bolt” seconds’ hand. Despite this, for many, the Ingénieur 666AD remains the quintessential tool watch, boasting a classic design and incorporating a highly-useful date-function (indicated by the letter ‘D’ in the reference number).

One of the key characteristics of the Ingénieur line is the watch’s resistance to magnetic interference, achieved through several features. The first is a soft iron under-dial, in addition to the dial itself, increasing the thickness with a more electrically-resistant material. Housed in a 36.5mm stainless steel case with a screw-down case-back, it has antimagnetic hands as well as an antimagnetic double-constructed case, incorporating a further soft iron inner-plate. This creates a Faraday cage, protecting the movement from magnetic disturbances of up to 80,000 A/m (or 1000 Gauss). Unusually thick by the standards of the day, it creates a noticeable presence on the wrist.

The dial is in exceptionally good condition, has a brushed silver finish, applied steel index markers, with classic 'International Watch Co' text and appropriately straight font, 'INGENIEUR' referenced on it. The tritium on the dial and hands has aged to a consistent yellow patina with gentle imperfections. It also has its original crown and comes equipped with the original steel bracelet and Gay Frères signed clasp.

This IWC Ingenieur is powered by the 21 jewel Cal. 8531 automatic-winding movement, beating at a rate of 19,800 A/h. It has an Incabloc shock-protection system and Breguet balance spring, which to this day is still used in high precision pieces. This is a true utilitarian watch that has everything a vintage collector would love.
