Universal Genève Tri-Compax black dial | 22297-1 | steel

The Tri-Compax comes in many variations, both in case shape and dial style, with this one being a very rare variant, featuring a distinctive black dial with silver sub-registers. Sized at 36mm and 13mm thick, it has a nice modern presence on the wrist, complemented by the round pump pushers.

The unrestored black face is extremely rare and very sought-after. The matte finish creates a nice texture and depth to the dial, and contrasts nicely with the concentric patterned, recessed silver sub-dials. All hands are original, including the distinctive red subdial hand at twelve o’clock, that denotes the date.

It is understandable why Tri-Compaxes are so loved; the sub-dials have fantastic proportionality, plus there is the vintage charm of the aesthetic; the applied lumes, 'UNIVERSAL GENÈVE', 'TRI-COMPAX' and 'SWISS' referenced on the dial all remind us of a bygone era. Steel hands with lumes mark the hours and the minutes, while the sub-dials and the chronograph movement has blue steel batons, with the latter having an elegant pear-shaped counter-balance. This complex watch has a thirty-minute register at three o'clock, a twelve-hour register at six o'clock and the sub-seconds register at nine o'clock. At noon, the dial features an aperture for the moon-phase and another sub-dial to show the date. On the left and right sides of it, apertures reveal the day and the month (in English), respectively.

The ref. 22297-1 can be found archived on page 350 of Pietro Sala's 'Universal Watch Geneve' reference book. Powered by the in-house Cal. 281, it features a triple calendar, chronograph and moonphase. The name ‘Tri-Compax’ stems from this, denoting that the watch has three complications. These complications can be set through the small pushers, found on the left side of the case. With Universal Genève being the first maker of a wristwatch with two chronograph pushers, this stunning piece belongs to a historical horological lineage.

This watch comes with a brown suede leather strap and a stainless steel tang buckle.
