Rolex Submariner | 5513 | Full Set
The Rolex Submariner was announced to the world in a typically genius marketing move by the brand. In September 1953, affixing a specially created version of the watch (known as the "Deep Sea Special") to the hull of Auguste Piccard’s submarine, the Submariner watch dove down with the vessel to a depth of 3,131.8 meters. As expected, it resurfaced unstirred.
Since that introduction over 60 years ago, the reference has become so deeply associated with the famous ‘Coronet’ logo, that the long-time aspiration of owning a Rolex watch is often blurred with that of owning a Submariner. Its iconic status and its importance to the brand led to its constant reinvention and modernisation. The reference 5513 was in production between 1966 and '84, making it one of the longest manufacturing runs in Rolex's history. It was worn by a host of famous people, from James Bond to Steve McQueen, and thus it is no surprise that the 5513 is seen by many as the quintessential Submariner.
This vintage example of the 5513 Submariner from 1971, encapsulates this idea in the best possible way. It comes as a full-set, with its original box and extraordinarily complete paperwork. Included is its original signed guarantee paperwork from 1971 (with serial number 263 XXXX), a signed guarantee from the original, Durban-based retailer, a Rolex Skin Diver Handbook (detailing a Navy Standard Decompression Table) and its original SUBMARINER 200 card - suggesting the original box should be used for cigarettes, after removing the card and the inner watch support. The watch also comes on a 93150 Oyster bracelet (580 end-links), with matching clasp and divers' extension.
The dial of this Submariner 5513 is in exceptionally good condition, has a matte black finish, tritium index markers, with classic 'ROLEX’ and ‘OYSTER PERPETUAL’ – ‘SUBMARINER' – ‘660 ft = 200m’ text referenced on it. The tritium index plots and ‘Mercedes’ hands have aged to a yellow patina. It also has its Rolex crown.
Whilst this 40 mm Oyster case has been refinished in the past, it is sharp and especially thick, sharing light-scratches with the case-back and bracelet, and retaining its definition. The case features a black, rotating bezel with a sixty-minute graduation, which is well-preserved. The pearl insert at 12 o’clock has aged to a light yellow patina, complementing the creamy yellow index hour markers and hands perfectly.
Inside the watch, it houses Rolex’s Calibre 1520 bi-directional, self-winding movement. The mechanism features a lever escapement, 26 jewels, mono-metallic balance and a KIF shock-absorber, beating at a rate of 19,800 A/h, with a power-reserve of 42 hours.
The evolution of the Rolex Submariner inspired some of the most historically important wristwatches, surviving the harshest of conditions. There aren’t many mechanical timepieces that have contributed more to the advancement of horological design, nor any that more clearly defined Rolex’s reputation for excellence. Many have tried to replicate its success, but no manufacturer since has consistently produced watches that endure everyday wear as well as a Rolex, owing much of their success to a unique market niche that the ‘Oyster’ watch helped define.
