Moritz Grossmann Atum | silver dial | rose gold
Arguably, the hands are the first thing to grab you. Very recognizably the work of Moritz Grossmann, they're created in-house over the course of four pain-staking days. They have a slim, fluid shape, three-dimensional presence, as well as exceptional finishing. They also sit close to the dial - a tell-tale sign of high-quality watchmaking. Their colour is the result of both considerable technical and creative effort. To achieve their unusual, warm brown tone, the watchmaker has to heat the hands manually over an open flame. The hands continuously change colour but only maintain this specific hue for a very brief time. Exposed to the flame for a second too long - all is lost, and days of work with it. But the effort pays off - their brownish hue perfectly complements the rose gold case and a fantastic contrast is born.
The dial itself is well-proportioned, with long, slim applied hour markers. The recess at six o'clock for the sub-seconds counter adds a further layer of depth and the thick, silver matte dial, fantastically catches the light. The overall effect is understated and tasteful.
Turning to the movement, it's the superbe finishing that really sets the watch apart. The attention to the aesthetics of the calibre 100.1 is impressive - the curved lines on the balance and escape wheel cock are sharp, and testament to the work of a very talented engraver. The jewels are white sapphires instead of red rubies, another point of distinction from other manufactures. These contrast perfectly with the purple colour of the screws. This tone of purple is achieved through the same precise heat-treatment process as the hands.
The jewels themselves are set in raised gold chatons, allowing the removal of the bearing jewels without risking damage to the plate. Given that Moritz Grossmann aims to create watches that can be serviced by any watchmaker, even in a hundred year's time, this is a smart solution.
The hack seconds release is operated through a pusher next to the crown, and restarts the movement after the crown is pulled out to set the time. When you pull out the crown on most watches, it is almost impossible to push it back, without slightly changing the position of the hands. This neat little pusher is a smart solution to the problem as the crown pulls itself back in but the hack seconds won't release until the pusher is activated, increasing precision.
The Atum is testament to the best of Saxon watchmaking tradition; a great balance between form and function, fantastically well made and beautifully finished - an exceptional dress watch, made to last.
