This rare, stainless steel Jaeger LeCoultre Tribute to Deep Sea Alarm American Edition from 2013 is in excellent condition and has been tested for mechanical functionality. This Tribute to Deep Sea is a faithful reissue to the original Deep Sea that was released in 1959, and sold to the American markets as the "LeCoultre Spécial Amérique 1959”. It is a limited edition with only 359 examples made, and it comes as a full set with box and papers.

The Jaeger LeCoultre Tribute to Deep Sea is an alarm watch, derived from the brands famous Memovox line. The mechanical alarm, in the context of diving is used to tell the diver that he is running low on oxygen and has to return atop. This is done through a hammer at the bottom of the case in the movement that resonates and vibrates.

Sized at 40.5mm, it is impressively similar in size to the original from 1959. The case features a mixture of brushed and polished surfaces, giving off a nice contrast and depth to the watch. It features long, straight bevelled lugs and a fixed, matte bezel made of anodised aluminium. The decision to use aluminium instead of ceramic was made in order to stay faithful to the original. Furthermore, the bezel is hour marked with luminous triangles on each pole. The black dial has a grainy texture with luminous hour markers and features syringe hands that are similarly filled with luminous material. The dial is signed ‘LeCoultre’, which was the name and branding Jaeger LeCoultre used in the American market back then.

As mentioned, this is a very accurate re-issue, as Jaeger LeCoultre even decided to use a plexiglass instead of sapphire so that they could achieved that vintage domed look on the crystal. There are two crowns on the watch; the one at 2 o’clock used to wind and set the alarm. This function is indicated by the triangle in the centre of the dial, that rotates accordingly. The crown at 4 o’clock is used to set the time. The two functions of the watch are powered separately by different barrels, so the winding of the alarm and the time has to be done at their respective crowns.

When the Tribute to Deep Sea was unveiled, Jaeger LeCoultre released two versions, an American Edition and a European Edition. They vary only in dial design, and this was how they were marketed in 1959. The American re-issue is significantly rarer, as only 359 examples were made, compared to 959 of the European Edition.

Powered by the self-winding in house Calibre 959, this is Jaeger LeCoultre’s modern movement used in all of their Memovox re-issues. This movement has a rotor that spins on ceramic ball bearings which do not require lubrication. Furthermore, the free-sprung variable inertia balance wheel beats at 28,800 vph. This watch has a power reserve of 45 hours and is water resistant to 100 metres. It comes on a black perforated calfskin strap, with an original polished tang buckle.

To note, is the slight scratch on the bezel at 3 o'clock. Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
