Regular price £6,500 Enquire

This vintage, steel Heuer Carrera ‘45 Dato’, reference 3147 watch from the late 60s/early 1970s is a beautiful example of a now iconic racing chronograph. It has its original, uniform silver dial with distinguishable matching patina on the tritium hour markers and hands. It also has its original, unsigned crown and stamped purchase booklet. The watch has been fully serviced.

The Heuer Carrera reference 3147 epitomizes the brand's famous sixties spirit and design philosophy. Jack Heuer’s strict adherence to legibility and function, ahead of all other considerations, accomplished a design classic that arguably represents his vision in its purest form. Advertised as “'a wristwatch, a stopwatch, and a calendar, too” – its design focuses on purpose. While the Carrera was produced with a range of dial configurations, the “45 Dato” (in reference to the dial’s sole 45-minute register at 3 o’clock) was the first chronograph to have a rotating disc for the date. This particular case dates to 1968/69 (serial 101 XXX); an early example of a second execution 3147, later sold in 1972.

Like many of Heuer’s most iconic chronographs, the origins of the Carrera can be traced back to 60s motorsport. It was inspired by one of history’s most dangerous events, the “Carrera Panamericana”, the legendary border-to-border sedan and sports car racing of the 1950’s, on the open roads of Mexico. Translated to "race" or "career" in Spanish, the event ran for five consecutive years and was entered by racers from all over the world, representing virtually every motorsport. Taking inspiration from this, Heuer chronograph wristwatches throughout the 1960s and 70s were often the tool of choice for professional racecar drivers, owing much to Jack Heuer’s appreciation for motorsport, and hands-on approach with its teams and drivers.

This second execution Heuer Carrera 45 Dato’ has a “T Swiss” dial. The hour markers are applied, together with aged tritium index markings. The Carrera reference 3147 also features a clear, off-center “Cyclops” dial and 1/5 second demarcations on the outer tension ring. The crown of the watch is correct and unsigned, along with corresponding original pump pushers.

Powered by a manually-wound, single-register Landeron 189 calibre (labeled as "Leonidas"), the movement is a cam-switching chronograph mechanism with 17 jewels; at its heart, beating at 18,000 A/h, with a power reserve of approximately 45 hours. The watch features a slightly thicker case profile than a three register, non-date Carrera due to the increased height of the Landeron movement.

In response to the heightening interest in vintage Heuer watches, Phillips will be hosting a Heuer themed sale in November 2017; a celebration of The Jack Heuer Era, comprised of watches owned by two of the most well-respected figures of the Heuer Community, Richard Crosthwaite and Paul Gavin. This marks a truly significant chapter in the company’s history, speaking volumes about the current vintage Heuer market, and further reinforcing the world's growing respect and appreciation for vintage Heuers. Undoubtedly, the years when Jack Heuer was in charge of the brand, are those most cherished by collectors, continuing to be celebrated at auction in remarkable fashion. It’s hard to ignore their staggering performance, in the midst of a thriving vintage market.

Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
