Fiona Krüger Petit Skull Black | steel
Fiona Krüger's artistic and innovative approach to watchmaking is both intriguing and highly intelligent. The Petit Skull range, her fourth creation, like this black dial example, are a testament to the watchmaker's exceptional inventiveness and originality. These Swiss, hand-made watches are powered by Swiss mechanical automatic movements.
The Skull range is inspired by the designer's international background, knowledge of Fine Art and watchmaking. The skull-shape of the case is an instant memonti mori. This symbol of mortality was already used in horology in the 17th century, and it is indeed one of the most ancient decorative motifs for timekeeping devices, like waterclocks. However, this skull, rather than being a poignant reminder of death, is a celebration of human life and achievement.
Starting with the dial, made in Kari Voutilainen's Comblémine factory, the stunning guilloché finishing is the result of impeccable and extensive artisanal handwork. It is made up of 9 distinct pieces and features two different patterns, a Traits droits en Soleil and a Clous de Paris guillochage. The guilloché is designed and crafted to create the three-dimensional shape and depth of a skull. Not unlike an Old Master's portrait, it uses light, to create the fantastic illusionary effect in bringing the skull to life. As if this wasn't enough, the eyes come alive as the mainspring and the balance spring move when the watch is wound. The teeth are finished with classic perlage and rhodium-plating, to match the bridges of the movement, as seen through the nose and eyes of the skull. The oscillating mass of the movement is itself beautifully customised with Traits droits en Soleil guillochage and a Noire New galvanised finish (to match the dial).
The originality of the design shines through the watch. In this respect, Fiona Krüger is indeed one of the most independent amongst independent watchmakers. The watch itself is a stunning statement piece, celebrating both individuality and haute-horlogerie, with an eye to the past and craftsmanship, but with an uncompromising inventive spirit. Afterall, haute-horlogerie reinvents itself thanks to such pioneers.
