This Co-Pilot Chronograph gets its nickname, "Jean-Claude Killy" after the French alpine ski racer, who was famously spotted wearing this Breitling model at the 1968 Olympics in the French Alps. He later became a brand ambassador for Rolex. It was mistakenly assumed that he wore a Rolex for this triple-gold medal win in Grenoble and it was only discovered later that it was in fact the Breitling Co-Pilot 765 CP.
The watch is powered by the signed Venus 178 ,17-jewel manual-winding movement, beating at a rate of 18,000 A/h. This 'standard' column wheel movement for Breitling Chronographs has a twist; instead of the usual thirty-minute sub-register at three o'clock, this modified movement has a fifteen-minutes counter. The sub-register advances every thirty seconds, giving greater precision for pilots. The movement has 45 hours of power-reserve when fully wound. As a vintage watch, we cannot warranty its current water resistance.
The stainless steel, round case has an imposing 41 mm diameter (measuring 47 mm from lug to lug), with a roboust 14 mm in thickness. The screw-down case-back is engraved with the Breitling 'B' logo, 'BREITLING', the reference number 765 CP and 'SHOCK-PROTECTED', 'ANTIMAGNETIC', STAINLESS-STEEL' and 'WATERPROOF'. The inner case-back is signed, and features the serial number, as well as service marks. Together with the fluted, signed crown and chronograph pushers, the overall feel of the watch is one of solid presence.
The matte black dial's most stunning feature is the unusual sub-register at three o'clock. In order to distinguish it from the typical thirty-minute registers, the fifteen-minute counter is larger than the other sub-dials. It also features five loomed stripes with corresponding Arabic numerals; together with the lumed arrow hand, all serving to ease legibility. The design clearly shows that this chronograph was intended to be used.
The monochrome dial also features white sub-dials at six and nine o'clock, for the twelve-hour and sub-seconds counters, both with black painted Arabic numerals and stick hands. In contrast, the main dial has white, lumed, pointed batons, reminiscent of the hands on military pilot's watches. The chronograph hand has a lumed arrow tip and a slightly widening counter-balance end. The dial also has lume stripes for the hours, a painted Arabic numeral at noon, and a white, painted outer track for the minutes. Yet the dial has a relatively simple look, without being sombre or overcrowded and only 'BREITLING', 'GENEVE' and 'SWISS MADE' are referenced on it.
This Breitling Co-Pilot Chronograph "Jean-Claude Killy" has a rare, bi-directional, ridged bezel with a monochrome dual graduation. Arabic numerals mark every hour in stainless steel on a black background, while every five minutes are shown in black on stainless steel. By showing a second time zone in such a precise way, it again adds to the aviator-feel of the watch. This rare vintage watch comes on a custom, black-padded crocodile strap with white stitchings, and has a vintage, stainless steel Breitling tang buckle.
