Split-Seconds Chronograph

Regular price £182,500 GBP USD EUR Enquire

This reference 5959P is as true to Patek Philippe’s approach to watchmaking today as it is to the great split-seconds chronographs of the early 20th century. With its entirely in-house calibre, painted Breguet numerals and sentimental case design, it is reminiscent of the brand’s complex timepieces from the 1920s. Rare and seldom seen, it is understood that Patek Philippe made around 10 examples of this reference per year before it was discontinued.

The reference 5959P harks back to the much-admired Patek Philippe split-seconds chronographs from the manufacture’s heritage. Launched in 2005, the 5959P was modelled on a 1923 wristwatch, sold by Sotheby’s in 2014. Almost identical to the original design, the 5959P is imbued with much of the same classic, refined spirit. The reference also features Patek Phillipe’s first fully in-house chronograph movement.

Up to that point, Patek made only a handful of monopusher watches, at a rate of less than one example every few years as special commissions for important clients. These include some of the rarest and most desirable watches made by Patek Philippe, being highly sought-after by collectors today. Continuing the tradition of the great split-seconds chronographs of the past, the 5959P was described by Ben Clymer, Founder of HODINKEE, in the following terms:

“The 5959 is one of those watches that makes me fall in love with Patek Philippe all over again. The thing makes no sense at all. But is so badass, it's almost indescribable.”

The 5959P has a white lacquer dial, with two uniform subsidiary dials at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock respectively. The dial is classically understated, with no scales on the periphery, Breguet numerals and crisp black printing used throughout. The watch displays six hands - hours, minutes, and seconds for the time, with split-seconds and minute hands for the chronograph.

Borrowing from its 1923 inspiration, the 5959P features an unusual 60-minute counter and dramatic spade-style hands. Modest in size, the 33mm case is refined and understated, making the inclusion of a split-seconds movement all the more impressive. A single button split-seconds chronograph, it features one button for start, stop and reset (at 3 o’clock), and another for the split timing (at 2 o’clock).

The reference 5959P integrates Patek Philippe’s CHR 27-525 PS calibre – “CHR”, short for " chronograph rattrapante" and “PS”, for petit seconde. The movement features many of Patek Philippe’s patented innovations and technical refinements in contemporary chronograph construction - based on the classic architecture of column-wheel control and with a slimmer, more dependable split-seconds mechanism.

When it was first introduced, the calibre CHR 27-525 PS movement was the thinnest split-seconds chronograph movement ever made (having since been eclipsed by the Vacheron Constantin calibre 3500). It certainly remains the most compact, impressively sized at only 27.3mm in diameter and 5.25mm thick.

The sophisticated complication controls the two chronograph hands, one of which may be stopped to measure an intermediate or lap time (or to retain a reference time), while the other continues its course unaffected. When released, the spilt-seconds hand instantly catches up with the primary hand and the two stacked hands move together.

One of the earlier examples of the reference to have left the manufacture, the movement has the Geneva Seal (rather than the Patek Philippe seal found on some later examples). The movement is beautifully finished, with exquisite chamfering on all angles, countersinks, polishing and decoration, in the form of Geneva striping. It features a Gyromax balance-wheel, beating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 semi-oscillations per hour) and boasting a power reserve of 48 hours.
