Nautilus Moon Phase | 5712G | white gold
More than forty years have passed since the introduction of the original Patek Philippe Nautilus and this now classic timepiece, is more popular than ever. Originally unveiled in the mid-1970s and designed by the legendary Gérald Genta, the Nautilus has become a veritable horological icon thanks to its pioneering role amongst high-end, luxury sports watches.
In 2006, Patek Philippe released the reference 5712 featuring an ultra-thin, calibre 240 PS IRM C LU, with off-centre micro-rotor. The 5712 marked the return of the moon-and-date version of the Nautilus, previously seen in the ref. 3712, from 2005. Initially released in steel, Patek Philippe subsequently released the 5712G in white gold.
Early examples of the Nautilus are now highly sought-after by collectors, commanding increasing prices in the vintage market. With an ever-growing waiting list, demand for the 5712 has also increased in recent years.
The 5712 re-interprets a number of signature design elements from the original Nautilus - mostly notably, the gradient dial, with horizontal grooves, which on the 5712G is grey rather than the traditional blue. Similar to its predecessor, the 5712 measures 43mm (up from 42mm), classing it amongst the ‘Jumbo’ collection. The white gold, three-piece case provides water resistance up to 60m, further featuring a large screw-down crown. The reference 5712 features Patek Philippe’s modern interpretation of the Nautilus case, with 3-part construction, sapphire case-back and curved ‘ears'.
This white gold, Nautilus 5712G watch is an excellent balance between function and classic design. The case is excellently finished, with bevelled, polished and granular surfaces. At 43mm in diameter, and 8.52 mm thick, the 5712 case is a unique twist of perspectives and size. The ‘ridged’ grey dial includes a power reserve indication (at half past 10), date and moon display (at 7 o’clock) and a small second at 4. It additionally features all the traditional indications of a time-only watch, with applied hour-markers and Nautilus hands (with luminescent inserts).
This reference 5712G is powered by Patek Philippe’s in-house calibre 240 PS IRM C LU (for petite seconde, indication de réserve de marche, calendrier et lune – small second, power reserve indicator, date and moon), visible through the sapphire display-back. It features 29 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, shock absorber mechanism a self-compensating flat balance spring and a monometallic balance, adjusted to cold, heat, isochronism and 5 positions. Furthermore, the 22k solid-gold micro-rotor is finished in classic Patek Philippe style, with Geneva stripes.
The watch comes on a Patek Philippe black rubber strap, and a matching white-gold twin-folding clasp. It is also accompanied by its original black alligator strap.
Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
