Prince Oysterdate 'Jumbo' | 90800 | steel
This rare, Tudor Prince Oysterdate ‘Jumbo’ (ref. 90800) is a classic vintage sports watch. With its Tudor-stamped, original 7206, riveted-link bracelet and clasp, with matching 80 end-links, it looks very much of its time. It has its original, brushed blue dial with subtle patina on the tritium index lume plots. It also features an ‘oversized’ 38mm Oyster case.
The history of Tudor dates back to 1926, when the house of “Veuve de Philippe Hüther”, a Swiss watchmaker, registered the trademark “The Tudor” in Geneva, for Hans Wilsdorf (founder of Rolex Watch Co.) The Tudor brand was transferred to Hans Wilsdorf in October 1936, leading to the formation of “Montres Tudor S.A” 10 years later, just after the Second World War. In the years leading up to the development of the brand, Hans Wilsdorf had long considered the idea of manufacturing a moderately priced watch that would still attain the technical, aesthetic and functional characteristics of a Rolex (many of which, share identical features to their Rolex counterparts).
This over-sized, Tudor Prince Oysterdate ref. 90800 example is remarkably well-preserved. The dial is in exceptionally good condition, has a brushed blue finish, applied steel index markers, with classic 'TUDOR’ and ‘PRINCE OYSTERDATE' text referenced on it. The tritium index plots and baton hands have aged to a beautiful, yellow patina. It also has its Rolex crown and comes equipped with its original riveted-link Tudor Oyster bracelet and clasp. This particular case dates to 1978 (serial 885 XXX).
Inside the watch, it houses a Tudor ETA calibre 2784 automatic movement, renowned for its stability and accuracy. The mechanism features a sweep second, 25 jewels, quick-set date and hack feature, beating at a rate of 28,000 A/h, with a power reserve of 45h.
The survival of many vintage Tudor examples today can be attributed to Rolex’s exceptional manufacturing process, combining innovative case design with some of history’s most robust calibres. The ‘Tudor Oyster’, adopted Rolex’s legendary hermetically sealed ‘Oyster’ case, first introduced in 1926. Beginning as the first waterproof and dust-proof wristwatch designed specifically for professional use. In 1952, early Tudor Oyster Prince watches were issued to 30 crew members of the Royal Navy, accompanying them on a scientific expedition to the northernmost reaches of Greenland.
The evolution of the Rolex and Tudor Oyster inspired some of the most historically important wristwatches, surviving the harshest of conditions. There aren’t many mechanical timepieces that have contributed more to the advancement of horological design, nor clearer defined Rolex’s, and subsequently Tudor’s, reputation for excellence. Many have tried to replicate its success, but no manufacturer since, has consistently produced mechanical timepieces that endure everyday wear as well as a Tudor or Rolex, owing much of their success to a unique market niche that the Oyster case helped define.
