This vintage, steel Heuer GMT 2446C “Mark 4”, with serial number 197 XXX, from the tail-end of the 1960s represents a distinct class of traveler’s watches. It has its original, fourth execution black dial with beautifully aged oversized registers. It also has its original, iconic “Pepsi” bezel.

Heuer Chronographs typify why vintage Heuer pieces are enjoying such a renaissance. Rarer than their Rolex counterparts, they are increasingly sought-after by today's collectors. This is due to both low production volumes and the fact that many examples have been badly restored and replaced with later components. This example on the other hand, has to be admired for its excellent unrestored condition.

Heuer introduced its first Autavia Chronograph in 1962. The introduction of the Heuer GMT followed soon after, around 1969, complementing classic Heuer styling with vibrant new colours.

This fourth execution Heuer GMT 2446C has a reverse, panda dial and features oversized registers, or ‘big subs’. The hour markers are applied with tritium lume, together with red index markings. What is characteristic to this watch is the steel-edged, mixed luminous and red painted minute and hour hands. Further to this, the Heuer GMT also features a bold “arrow head” GMT hand and coordinating chronograph sweep seconds' hand. The watch retains its original, slightly faded blue and red bezel, manufactured from single piece of aluminum, which gives this model its Pepsi moniker. It is in excellent vintage condition and offers a truly intuitive way of tracking a second time-zone. The crown of the watch is correct and bears the standard Heuer signature. Moreover, the fluted pushers are original, evident through the way the case has been machined to accommodate their function.

Sized in a proportionate and wearable 40 mm case, the watch features straight lugs that are sharply beveled. The watch case is thick and does not suffer from over polishing. This can be seen through the strong visibility of the bevels in the lugs.

Powered by a Valjoux 724 calibre, a GMT version of the tried and tested Valjoux 72 column wheel chronograph movement, it is famed for its reliability and widespread use by big manufactures such as Rolex.

Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
