It is a fine example of craft from a master who has shaped the skills of some of the best-known French-origin watchmakers today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c!-- SECTION BREAK --\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is only the third wristwatch by educator and watchmaker Thierry Ducret. Based in Flangebouche, near the French border with Switzerland, Ducret teaches watch- and clock-making at the Lycée Edgar Faure, the country’s premier institution for this craft. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHe started working on a wristwatch that would wear his name in 2018. Inspired by the open-work layout of the Breguet Tradition, he began with a Unitas 6497 èbauche base, extensively reworking it to his own designs. Consequently, the calibre Ducret created bears almost no resemblance to its origins. Its industrial architecture is in tension with the superlative hand-finishing the watchmaker employs.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis third example, created between 2023 and 2024, features a 42mm stainless-steel case that stands 14mm tall. The rounded, satinated bezel features scalloped details that function as hour markers. The robust midcase, from which the lugs issue, is polished. The stepped caseback, secured by six screws, is again satinated. Appropriate for the modern case proportions is the robust, knurled crown. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lugs stand 20mm apart and are furnished with a black, large-grained leather strap secured by a pin buckle.\u003cbr\u003eThe mechanics of the calibre serve as dial adornment. Crafted from brass, the plates and bridges are coated in black nickel, while the brass wheels and mainspring barrel wear silver nickel. The contrast of the finishing is attractive. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe central skeletonised mainspring draws the eye. It is anchored by the same triangular bridge that holds the wheels that advance the hours and minutes hands. This, Ducret says is a first. The finger-style bridges that arc the north-eastern section anchor the wheels of the going train and escapement. The layout is exceedingly lucid, as if designed to educate the wearer about the transmission of energy from the mainspring to the balance.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eA skeletonised bridge anchors the yoke-style balance wheel. Its form, with four raised edges and four inward portions with 12 timing screws, is designed to be as massive as possible, while also being aerodynamically efficient. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe black polished mechanics of the keyless works are visible at 3 o’clock. Unique to this watch is the red enamel coating the arrow-style hours and minutes hands – previous examples featured heat blued hands. This was based on the commissioning client’s request. They are beautifully finished and hold up to close scrutiny. The heads of the visible screws on the dial side are black polished, as is the plaque bearing the maker’s name between 4 and 6 o’clock. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe minimal movement-side view is dominated by the crown and ratchet wheels, framed by the black nickel-coated baseplate. Also visible are the jewels on which the wheels of the going train pivot. A back polished plaque bearing the serial number is also found here. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs noted earlier, almost every aspect of the No. 3 is crafted by Ducret, right down to the springs and screws. Just the crystals, the leather strap and the few wheels that it has in common with the Unitas 6497 come from outside his workshop. However, the watchmaker has done well to source these from nearby – the crystal is crafted in Morteau while the straps come from an artisan a few kilometres down the road from Ducret workshop in Flangebouche. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis watch is a rarity in every sense of the word. It is hand-crafted to the exacting standard of a maker who has taught some of the best-known independent names working today. His method, and teaching commitments mean that he only produces a vanishingly small number of pieces.
