4ATM chronograph silver dial | E. 13001 | steel
Ref. E. 13001
Produced by the French watchmaker for a short period between 1968-71, it is estimated that less than 100 of these Jaeger 4ATM’s were produced, making it one of the rarest chronographs of the era. The "4ATM" nickname comes from the engraving on the case-back, denoting depth rating, with 4ATM, or atmospheres, translating to 30 meters. While the 4ATM was produced with a number dial configurations, the “albino” variation is a rarity, in comparison to the standard silver and black dials, with contrasting registers.
This Jaeger 4ATM has a uniform, satin-brushed silver dial and features oversized, recessed registers, or ‘big subs’, with an outer tachymeter scale. The hour markers are applied, together with coordinating inner dot markings. The dial exhibits a three-register chronograph arrangement, with the three o’clock sub-dial showing a thirty-minute counter, the nine o’clock sub-dial showing a running seconds and the six o’clock subsidiary showing the hour-recorder. It features a black Jaeger logo, while ’17 Rubis' is referenced on the dial at twelve o'clock, indicating the movement jewels.
Sized in a proportionate and contemporary 41 mm case, the watch features straight, beveled lugs. The case is thick and does not suffer from over polishing. This can be seen through the visibility of the bevels in the lugs. The screw-down case-back features ‘ETANCHE 4ATM’, 'INCABLOC' and 'STAINLESS STEEL' sharply engraved on the outside, along with the serial number. The case features a black, aluminium rotating bezel with a twelve-hour graduation, which has faded to a dark grey. Interestingly, the graduations appear in reverse order from 12-0, in increments of 3 for the quarter hours.
Powered by a Valjoux 72, a tried and tested column wheel chronograph calibre, famed for its reliability, and shared by many of the era’s most iconic timepieces, such as the Rolex Daytona and Heuer Autavia.
This Jaeger 4ATM comes on an unworn olive NATO strap and generic steel, tang buckle.
Viewings can be arranged in Central London.
