The Ref. 2444 laid the design foundations for its successor, Heuer's most famous Carrera line. Affectionately known as the ‘Pre-Carrera’, the aesthetics of this watch bridged the identity of Heuer from the 50’s and the 60’s, setting the minimalist design tone, for what Heuer would become famous for.
The watch is a three-register chronograph, with three oversized sub-dials featuring the minute counter at three o’clock, the hour counter at six o’clock and a running seconds at nine o’clock. The sub-dials have concentric engraved circles, creating depth to the otherwise simple layout. The unrestored silver dial features a solitary Heuer logo and Dauphine hands. The original luminous material on the hands have aged to a creamy yellow, with the triangular luminous hour markers matching in colour. Applied, elongated steel index markers finish off the look.
Sized at 35mm, the stainless steel stepped case is clean in its design. It features long lugs, and small round pump chronograph pushers. The caseback is signed by 'ED. HEUER & Co', correct to this period.
This Heuer Pre-Carrera is powered by the ever-reliable and widely used Valjoux 72 column-wheel movement. This manual-winding chronograph calibre has been used in other watch models, such as the Rolex Daytona, as well as later Heuer models, such as the Autavia. It comes on an unworn black lizard strap.
