The Carrera 12 Dato is one of the most popular vintage chronographs. While it is referred to as a Carrera, it does not use the Carrera case but a unique design, to be opened from the front, after removing the crystal. Sized at 36mm, the stainless steel case is clean in its design. It features long lugs, small round pump chronograph pushers and pushers at 8 and 10 o'clock, for changing the month, day and date. Interestingly, both the month and week-day functions can be set via the pusher at ten o'clock, by pressing it lightly for the month, and strongly for the day to change. The case-back is signed by Heuer-Leonidas.
The watch is a three-register chronograph, with three sub-dials featuring the thirty-minute counter at three o’clock, the twelve-hour counter at six o’clock and a running seconds at nine o’clock. The sub-dials have black stick hands and concentric engraved circles, creating depth on the face. The unrestored, silver dial also features a painted blue circle for the day, shown with a white hand with a red crescent pointer. The day and month apertures (both English) are placed at twelve, under a solitary, applied Arabic "12". The original luminous material on the hands have aged to a creamy yellow, with the circular luminous hour markers matching in colour. Applied, elongated steel index markers and a black, painted chronograph track finish off the look. Despite the numerous functions, the design is clean and very readable.
This Heuer Carrera 12 Dato is powered by the ever-reliable and widely-used Valjoux 72C column-wheel movement. This manual-winding chronograph calibre has been used in other watch models, such as the Rolex Daytona, as well as later Heuer models, including the Autavia. The watch comes on an unworn black Nato strap.
