Founded by Monsieur Mille in 1999, in collaboration with famed movement manufacturer APRP (Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi), the brand has from the very beginning, demonstrated a taste for experimental, high-tech watches. When Richard Mille released the RM001 tourbillon in 2001, it was just a hint of where the brand would progress to, over the subsequent decades, taking inspiration from the worlds of Formula One, aerospace and automotive research. With their motto of 'a racing machine on the wrist' in mind, Richard Mille's designs reinforce the concept of performance, while innovation remains at the core of the brand's identity, both in watchmaking and materials-science.

Richard Mille’s philosophy was made clear when the RM001 was discontinued after just 17 pieces; limited examples of experimental watches, advancing in complexity and innovation over time. The RM 005 was launched in 2004, in collaboration with Vaucher SA.

Like all watches from the Jura-based manufacture, the RM 005 has a unique presence on the wrist. This example features a brushed white-gold, tonneau-shaped case - measuring 37.8mm by 45mm. The sandwich-style construction of the tonneau case is comprised of three parts; a centre section, along with front and reverse bezels. The high tolerances of the case keep the seals in place, requiring a fit of hundredths a millimetre between parts. The curvature of the case further complicates the machining process, requiring over 200 separate machining operations for each case. The movement of the RM 005 is fixed to the case on shock isolating rubber mounts and Richard Mille screws, as opposed to a traditional casing ring.

The luminous, white-painted numerals are displayed on a sapphire plate, appearing to float between the hands and movement. The small dots hour markers on the rehaut are also luminous, with luminous-filled tips for the skeletonised hands providing increased legibility in low-light conditions. Richard Mille uses highly contrasting colours and shapes to achieve optimal legibility and functionality, against the exposed movement below.

Developed by Vaucher SA, the self-winding Calibre RMAS7 features a baseplate and bridges made from Grade 5 titanium, which is PVD coated. The RM 005 features Richard Mille’s exclusive variable position automatic rotor, where the winding of the mainspring can be adapted to suit to the wearer’s level of activity. By adjusting the placement of the high-palladium, white-gold wings, the rotor’s inertia is modified. In doing so, the winding speed can be increased, or slowed down for those who are highly active.

This Richard Mille RM 005 displays all the characteristics that make the brand’s watches so coveted today. It comes fitted with a navy blue velcro Richard Mille strap, and is accompanied by and is accompanied by its its original black alligator strap (with titanium and white gold buckle), its original stamped warranty card and fitted presentation box.

Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
