Having long collected lighters, several of us at A Collected Man loved the idea of one that touched on the world of travel and timekeeping, so when this prototype Dunhill example became available, we had to have it...
With the serial number “0000” engraved on its base (indicating it as a final prototype) this rare Dunhill GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) lighter was first introduced in circa 2000 as part of Dunhill’s ‘GMT Collection’. Pre-dating the limited edition of 1,884 that were later produced, the lighter commemorates the 1884 International Meridian Conference in which Greenwich was chosen as the Prime Meridian, and thus the creation of “Greenwich Mean Time”.
Measuring approximately 20mm in diameter and 65 in length, the stainless steel cylinder carries lines that are representative of the time-zones in twenty-four cities around the worlds. GMT is marked using red, as with all pieces in the collection, and the upper region of the lighter rotates to determine time. Completing the lighter is a blue and white cabouchon, set in the flame adjust wheel, a feature Dunhill described as a depiction of ‘the view of the earth from space’.
