1741 | Perpetual Calendar | platinum
The Urban Jürgensen Reference 1741 in Platinum with Perpetual calendar, leap-year indicator, moon-phase and centre-seconds, was first shown at Basel World 2016 . The reference 1741 has a handmade, grenage dial with white-gold applied Arabic numerals and stunning Observatory hands. The caliber is based on the Urban Jürgensen P4 In-house movement, enhanced by the introduction of the leap year indicator and is housed in a 41mm case, with classical Urban Jürgensen teardrop lugs.
The Ref. 1741 PT features a 41 mm platinum, 3-piece case and Urban Jürgensen’s contemporary tear-drop lugs and convex bezel. The Grenage dial is a delicate, hand-crafted process beginning with a single piece of solid silver. The dial further features classic, Urban Jürgensen domed solid white gold, Arabic numerals. The Grenage layer is then built step-by step, using a mix of silver powder, salts and other ingredients, before hand-brushing onto the dial. An electrochemical reaction creates the beautifully-pearled finish on the dial; a silvery frosty surface with unique depth and granularity.
The hand-made, solid white gold ‘observatoire’ Urban Jürgensen hands are turned on a precision lathe, thermally blued (to Urban Jürgensen’s unique navy colour) and mirror polished, with the arms of the hands carefully riveted in place, creating a unique visual effect reminiscent of early 18th and 19th century marine chronometers made by Urban Jürgensen. The “eye” of the hour hand is a solid gold insert, concentrically diamond polished and friction fit.
It takes more than 20 different operations to create the Urban Jürgensen moon disc, and the result is a unique display of classic workmanship, rarely expressed in modern horology. The disc is hand-crafted from mirror-polished, thermally-blued steel, in which the stars are manually inlaid in gold, along with two solid gold, mirror polished moons; press-fitted into corresponding holes, finishing the blue night-sky with beautifully symmetrical moons and stars.
The Urban Jürgensen ‘P4’, in-house movement is expertly finished and elaborately decorated, with tapering lines towards the escapement wheel in Côtes de Genève patterning. This manually-wound movement is adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and 5 positions, with 24 working jewels. It features a stop-seconds function, allowing the movement to be stopped and synchronized to a time signal with absolute precision. The ‘Swiss Lever’ escapement design of the movement allows the balance wheel to be engaged with the mechanism only during the split-second it swings through its centre position, reducing overall friction and enabling far superior timekeeping ability. The movement, adapted for the Ref. 1741, is fairly discrete, at 6.85mm x 32mm, accommodating both the perpetual calendar and moon-phase, with two barrels and a power-reserve of 60 hours.
